Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is focused on directly observing and mapping the flows of work, information, customers, and resources as they occur; summarizing them visually; and then envisioning a future state with enhanced performance.

This course introduces process and value stream mapping. It focuses on how to create process maps for a variety of municipal settings.  Finally, it explains how to conduct an analysis to identify opportunities for an improved future state.

Objectives

  • Define what value stream mapping and process mapping are and identify examples of when each is used
  • Identify the symbols in a process flow chart and define what each stands for
  • Identify the key steps involved in creating a process map
  • Conduct a high-level current state analysis
  • Identify the key steps involved in creating a value stream map
  • Identify the symbols in a value stream map and define what each stands for
